Innovating History Education for All

From September 2014 to the end of August 2017, IBE is participating in the Innovating History Education for All (IHEA) project, coordinated by the EUROCLIO Association headquartered in The Hague. The project aims to raise the quality of history and civics education by ensuring broad access to modern educational tools and applications enabling the wider and more focused use of new technologies in teaching history. The international and interdisciplinary project team consists of – in addition to the History Section at IBE – representatives of the Georg Eckert Institute, staff of the Mount School York and Webtic, an IT company.

IBE’s History Section is primarily responsible for the initial needs assessment carried out to identify the needs of history teachers in Europe relating to their use of ICT in history education. To date, focus group interviews with teachers from 10 countries were conducted. This work resulted in the publication of the first version of a report “Needs Assessment”, included on the project’s website in March 2016,  presenting the most important conclusions on history teachers’ needs in using ICT in their classes. An in-depth analysis of the collected data is currently being performed as the result of discussions with experts on the use of information technologies in schools.

Additionally, two internet surveys were conducted relating to specific tools being developed for use by teachers. The results of these surveys were distributed in the form of notes to interested persons. The first meeting to disseminate the results of the project among Polish teachers was held in June 2016. Other partners in the project are responsible for developing “Historiana Labs” – a series of blog posts introducing online tools that are freely available and can be used to promote historical thinking – especially targeted to history educators.

The IHEA team at IBE is led by Jakub Lorenz and coordinated by Klaudia Jasik  This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
